Pages, Pals, and Progress:

BICYN’s Book Club!

Pages, Pals, and Progress is an informal space to meet like-minded folks who want to learn more about the complexities of poverty and anti-poverty action, and share in dialogue together

We are so excited to be starting something new – a BOOK CLUB! We plan to meet once-a-month virtually, alternating between books and audio/visual media.

Pages Pals and Progress will be hosted by BICYN directors Shanaya Fischer and Ellen Spannagel. They write: We want to co-create a no-pressure, informal, as well as inclusive space where folks with curious minds and hearts can come together to learn about poverty and anti-poverty with and from one another.

Our next virtual meeting is on April 24th, 2024 at 7:30pm ET.

Join us for our next book club meeting on April 24, 2024!

In this book club meeting, we’ll talk about an episode from the Appointed podcast: "A Conversation with Kendal David: Basic income, Canada Disability Benefit & Youth engagement."

In the podcast episode, Senator Kim Pate sits down with Kendal David (the co-chair of Basic Income Canada Youth Network) to discuss Bill C-22: Canada Disability Benefit, and Bill S-233: National Framework for a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income Act. Through through the lens of this podcast, we'll chat about the dynamics of a disability benefit, a basic income, and disability justice. The Appointed podcast episode is available on Simplecast, Apple podcasts, and Youtube.

Past book club meetings

In March 2024, we held our first book club meeting! We read and discussed "Radical Trust: Basic Income for Complicated Lives", a compelling work that delves deep into the dynamics of trust when utilizing a basic income to alleviate poverty.

We were trilled to have the authors, Evelyn Forget and Hannah Owzcar, join us for this first book club meeting! Through the lens of "Radical Trust," we chatted about the concept of a basic income and how it can help navigate the complexities of poverty and its intersecting factors.
